In the midst of an abysmal season, there is some buzz circulating in San Fransisco. For weeks, rumors regarding the Warriors and Giannis have been prevalent in the league’s closest circles. If the Bucks fail to supply Giannis with winning pieces, there is a belief that he would consider moving on.
The Warriors would be waiting with open arms. While this scenario seems like a far-off dream, it has become a very real possibility in many folks’ minds, and it could happen a lot sooner than you’d think.
According to Connor Letourneau of the San Francisco Chronicle, if the Warriors finish the 2019-20 season as one of the worst teams and get the No. 1 pick in the next summer’s draft, they would use it as the main trade chip to acquire Antetokounmpo from the Bucks.
“First of all, it’s highly unlikely that Milwaukee would make Giannis Antetokounmpo available in a trade. But if the Bucks did, they certainly would have a big asking price. The mega-trades that sent Anthony Davis to the Lakers and Paul George to the Clippers have set the standard quite high. If the Warriors got the No. 1 pick, they’d probably need to offer Milwaukee that selection, D’Angelo Russell, Draymond Green or Klay Thompson, and another young piece or two — think Eric Paschall and Kevon Looney — just for the Bucks to take them seriously.”
Giannis would have to show signs of leaving for the Bucks to really even consider trading him. He is a free agent in the summer of 2021, and they wouldn’t want to lose him for nothing. A package of Draymond, Russell, and a high lottery pick might just be enough to start the conversation.
There is already believed to be mutual interest between Giannis and the Warriors, so they are considered to be among the strongest pursuers for his services via free agency and the trade market.
But, knowing that the Dubs don’t have to wait another year to make it happen, it really puts a new perspective on their struggles without Curry and Klay this season.
