A 75-year-old woman was on Thursday doused with gasolene and set ablaze by a man who attempted to rape her.
The woman, who suffered extensive burns to her body, reportedly fought off an unidentified man, who attempted to rape her at her home in Lima district, St James, in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
“Mi seh mi shock when mi go round the road and see how the boy set the poor old woman pon fire,” one community member told the WEEKEND STAR.
“Mi up a mi house and mi see people a run go round the road, so mi run go round there to. Eye-water come a mi eye when mi si how them handle the woman, ” he further stated.
“Everybody round here know her and respect her, and right now all a wi vex.”
The police said that shortly after 3 a.m., on Thursday, the elderly woman, who lived alone, was at her house when she was attacked by the unidentified male who made sexual advances at her.
She managed to fight him off, and after she shouted for help, her attacker fled the scene. Later on Thursday morning, about 6:30, the woman was walking along the roadway in the vicinity of her home when she was attacked by the same man. He reportedly held on to her, doused her with gasolene and set her on fire.
Residents ran to the assistance of the woman, and the unidentified attacker fled the scene. The Adelphi police were summoned and upon their arrival, they found the woman who was severely burnt. She was rushed to hospital, where she has been admitted in serious condition.
